Google Pixel 6a battery life: tests and charging speed

The Google Pixel 6a is definitely one of the best budget smartphones you can buy in 2023. Despite its competitive price, the phone comes with Google's first-gen Tensor chipset on board, which is the same silicon that powers the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro, Google's previous flagship phone.

The phone also takes amazing photos. Yes, it comes with a 12MP main camera, which may not sound like much on paper, but Google's computational photography compensates for the smaller sensor.

So, with the Pixel 6a, you receive top-tier performance and the ability to take great photos for less money. But what about Pixel 6a's battery life? Does the phone has good battery life as well? Well, let's find out!

Does the Pixel 6a have better battery life?

The Pixel 6a has a good battery life but doesn't have a better battery life compared to its predecessor, the Pixel 5a. During our tests, the budget phone managed to last a day with heavy use and up to a day and a half with regular usage. With the Pixel 6a, you can watch videos for around 8 hours and 51 minutes or browse the internet for around 13 hours and 51 minutes before the battery drains completely. If you're a gamer, you'll get approximately 6 hours and 48 minutes of gaming time before needing to charge the phone.

In comparison, the Pixel 5a was able to last a day and a half or sometimes even two days between charges. You could stream videos or play games for about 10 hours and 46 minutes, or browse the web for about 15 hours and 6 minutes on a single charge.

The Pixel 6 also comes with Google's Extreme Battery Saver features, which, according to Google, should give your Pixel 6a up to 72 hours of battery life. The Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro are given 48-hour estimates with the feature active. Of course, it's unlikely to get that kind of longevity in real life since the Extreme Battery Saver, which disables all but the phone's most essential features, is meant to be used in battery emergencies only.

How big is the Google Pixel 6a's battery?

The Pixel 6a sports a 4410mAh battery, which is smaller than the Pixel 5a's 4680mAh cell. But despite its smaller battery, Google's latest budget phone has excellent battery life.

Does the Pixel 6a have wireless charging?

The Pixel 6a does not support wireless charging. Presumably, to keep costs low, Google does not include wireless charging in its budget phones. So, unlike a Pixel 7 or 7 Pro, you can’t charge your Pixel 6a wirelessly.

Does the Pixel 6a have reverse wireless charging?

The Pixel 6a does not support reverse wireless charging. Since the new budget phone from Google doesn’t have wireless charging, you won't be able to charge your Pixel Watch or Pixel Buds Pro with your Pixel 6a phone.

What charger does the Pixel 6a use?

The Pixel 6a supports up to 18W of wired fast charging speed, but, of course, don’t expect to receive a charging brick with your new Pixel 6a phone. However, you can visit our Pixel 6a fast chargers article and buy one from there, or go to Google's website and purchase Google's 30W USB-C Power Charger for $25. The tech giant doesn't sell an 18W charger anymore.

How fast does the Pixel 6a charge?

The Pixel 6a usually charges from 0 to 100% in around 1 hour and 52 minutes. Sadly, it didn't beat the 1 hour and 45 minutes charging time of the Pixel 5a, but we guess that the charging speed just couldn't make the priority list at the price point that the Pixel 6a was trying to meet. Nevertheless, if you usually charge your phone at night, the charging speed probably won't be an issue for you.
